A wonderfully expressive original production cel of Kintaro Oe from Golden Boy, capturing the series’ hero in one of his trademark moments of complete emotional overload. The enormous close-up, wild expression, and hands clutched against his head perfectly capture the exaggerated visual comedy that makes Kintaro such a memorable character.
Produced by A.P.P.P. for the 1995 OVA GOLDEN BOY さすらいのお勉強野郎, this two-layer production cel comes from Episode 2, “Temptation of the Maiden” (乙女の誘惑 / Otome no yūwaku).
The cel is screen-matched at approximately 9:48 into the episode. Kintaro is caught between trying to behave like a gentleman and his more perverted imagination while watching Naoko change clothes in front of a mirror. Naoko is deliberately teasing him, but Kintaro believes she is an innocent maiden and instead condemns himself as a “dirty-minded rat.” His anguished expression in this frame sums up the joke perfectly.
The top cel layer carries a cloudy white airbrushed lighting effect used in the scene as part of the visual gag, placing Kintaro in a dramatic spotlight as he condemns his own thoughts. This is an intentional production effect, not clouding or deterioration of the cel.
The setup includes the matching production douga and a matching copy background, allowing the cel to be displayed in scene context while also preserving the original production drawing used in creating the animation.
This is an authentic, hand-painted Japanese production cel used in the traditional animation process. It is not a reproduction, print, or fan-made piece.
A striking Golden Boy cel with exceptional display presence, a large image of the series’ central character, and one of the expressive reaction shots that defined the OVA’s distinctive animation style.
